To Be Or Not To Be
This is the review of play "The Creeper" which I saw as part of the The Hindu theatre festival on 9th August. This review was also published in the Hindu dated 12-Aug-2008. After going to the venue found that one of the actors was Abhishek Mazumdar, one of the winning playrights himself.
"Creeper" creeps into your conscience slowly - first starting as a light-hearted comedy to conflict and then confession. Starting with rip roaring performance, interspersed by colloquial jokes, fighting to start narrating a story got transposed to a magical box that opened a chest of stories - poignant and aptly revealing the 'To Be's and 'Not to Be's of urban middle-class living filled with stress, identity crisis and conflicts. Yet somewhere the sutradhar lost the string that connects it all. From nostalgia to digital living to an intimate scene in terrace - this modern Vikram & Bet-'all' managed to confuse and capsule the audience with some metaphorical realities. "What will happen to my email-id when I die" - A real question in a virtual world, the actors left lasting impression through their impeccable dramatization of orkut, blogs, messenger, lost photos and memories. Had the director transitioned the scenes well, it could have been a compelling story keeping the audience enraptured till the end.
